The opening plenary session sets the scene for the event. It will follow the “journey” from inclusion through media literacy to excellence and empowerment. This journey starts with inclusion through techniques and approaches such as digital storytelling, which combines personal narratives with digital tools. It goes on to getting more confident with digital skills, media literate, and included in the digital world, and leads us to STEM skills and using technology to address societal issues.

Plenary session / Panel Discussion “How can digital storytelling boost social inclusion?”

Few would deny that storytelling is a powerful tool for inspiring change and influencing thought leaders, decision makers and communities. Sharing personal stories has a strong impact both on the teller and the audience. In the digital era, the shape and delivery of stories has shifted dramatically. Long narratives and conventional journalism now share the stage with messages of 140 characters and people can create their own short stories with compelling digital images which speak more than 1000 words.
Recognising this big opportunity in the intersection of story and technology, in this panel we will explore the role that digital technology can play in elevating the practice of storytelling as a means to improve the well-being of people around the world in various contexts – students, migrants, low-literate adults, patients.

Five parallel interactive breakout sessions: Stops on a digital journey

Participants will have a chance to explore one of five different “stops” in our digital journeys in parallel group discussions. The topic of each “stop” will be presented briefly and then participants will discuss about their role and come up with three concrete actions to help more people reach this stop of their digital journey.

• • Global citizenship education in digital competence centres
    BRIGHTS project case study, lessons learned, experiences to share, role of digital competence centres in teaching global citizenship education. Moderators: Barbara Quarta, ALL DIGITAL; Luca Pagliaricci, Centro Studi Foligno
  • IT skills for young refugees and migrants

Global citizenship education and media literacy and the role of digital technologies in teaching it

Nowadays, it is crucial that education and lifelong learning prepare people to live and share their own perspective in a globalised society, and Global Citizenship Education (GCE) has been developed in and outside of Europe to address this need.
To be full members of an increasingly globalised society, citizens need to understand and discuss the complex social, ecological, political and economic issues deriving from the new ways of interacting, thinking and acting. Digital technologies are at the heart of these new ways, but they can also play a key role in fostering knowledge, awareness, critical thinking and participation.

Lightning Talks on replicable projects, multi-stakeholder partnerships, best practices, etc.

Lightning talks are fixed-format presentations to ensure structure and relevance (10 x 30 second slides or 5 x 1 min slides; slides change automatically). Each presenter has 5 minutes to present the project and then 5 minutes for questions from the audience. The slides/ppts are in the same format with fixed questions:

3. what you would change,
4. what you would keep the same,
5. what you learned.
